Project Red Pheonix - Break Out.

Despite holding up the initial North Korean assault 24 hours earlier. Further armoured columns have broken through across the entire frontier and were making deep thrusts towards the prize of Seoul. The pace of the advance surprised the South Korean and US high command and meant many of the allied units were cut off and bypassed, left to be dealt with by the lesser divisions following up.

One such trust found one NK division trapped between the still effect southern defences near Seoul and several retreating units falling back from the DMZ. The retreating south Korean divisions now engaged in a desperate action to break through the forward Kim units to link up with the defenders still holding Seoul.

The South Koreans must exit at least 50% of their units from the Eastern Table edge.

The North Koreans win a major victory if no imperialists exit the board, a minor victory if less than half escape.

Despite a road running through the centre of the table the Southern Armour rushes down the left flank of the table, the North Korean Units were hidden, so taking no chances the south plasters the forward most farm in thick smoke.

The NK high command calls in his limited air support looking to stall the advancing armour.

The southern armour reaches the earth mounds of the paddy fields, still unsure what they were facing they call forward the infantry to flush out the defenders.

Meanwhile in the centre the Fox Armoured cars rush forwards tempting the defenders to reveal themselves, AP rounds and HMG's blazed away but the little Foxes held their ground.

Kim's forces rushed back from the front to stem the advancing southern forces.

The infantry charge through the smoke only to unearth a recon unit, the southern amour skirts the farm needed to speed up, what an unnecessary delay for a bunch of scouts.

Southern infantry flank the defenders looking to flush them out of the farm, this was taking far to long.

The southern armour reached the road when the shells started to land, 155mm shells burst amongst the medium tanks, the thin top armour was no protection and two of the lead section brewed up.

Time had run out and with the blocking force now heading into town the window to escape had closed.

Another loss for the south,

A fun encounter, cross country was not a good choice, whilst skirting the bulk of the NK blinds was a good move the lack of speed allowed the Kim's to redeploy and block the advance.

The revised artillery and air power rules worked well which gave a good balance between attack and defence. I might speed up future games by increasing the unit sizes for the infantry from a section to a company.

Dispatches from the Front VIII

April was a good month with two projects cleared in one go.
May sees a return to the Elizabethan Project with a plan to complete the English forces and some new evil elements entering the campaign.

As we all know a project is never complete, so why not compliment the new infantry with some extra terrain, I ordered a number of new buildings from Iron Clad Miniatures to bolster the Stickler Campaign. They took a little longer than usual arrive due to the new working practices but will fit both the WW2 campaign and my Chechen War stuff.

Two small ruins these should fit in with the other bombed damaged buildings. They come with some additional flooring to make a second storey.

The log bunker is suitable for a number of periods and comes with two firing slits and a detachable roof, a number of the scenarios in Platoon Forward call for bunker clearance or an OP, so I am sure it will get some use in the next couple of weeks.

When they said a large Russian barn they weren't kidding.... I doubt I will be putting the barn and the ruin next to each other on the table top.

Finally a small Russian church enough for a small family and a church mouse. I will base this piece up to give it some texture on the table top. I suspect these should be gaming table ready in a couple of weeks.

The diplomacy campaign continues to keep the club talking I have had a couple of good turns and the Turkish empire continues to expand with new provinces in Russia and the Mediterranean

We have been trying to give Standard Games - Cry Havoc/Outremer a run out over facetime with both players having the maps deployed, it was a bit of a bugger setting up the maps as our collective eye sight has failed over the years and it was hard to recognise Fulk vs Giles, but played reasonably well if only the Wi-Fi would hold up.

Another potential distraction?
Every couple of years the conversation turns to turning this to a miniatures game.
And with Footsore's Caliphate range back in stock. Hhhhhmm….

Competition time, I was packing away the new reinforcements for the South Koreans and the new M60's when I noticed that the rear guard rail is slightly smaller on one of them. Answers on a postcode if you an identify the different class ?
(Sorry no actual prizes..)

This looks interesting. I quite liked the idea of the Drowned Earth perhaps my Atlanians will have another excuse to entire the table, besides co-op/solo dinosaur hunting? - I mean what's not to like.

Up next Spanish reinforcements and a return to Elizabethan England.

Red Phoenix - Reinforcements and a nagging doubt.

Another project down....
Varnished yesterday but technically finished in 'Small scale' April.

Having completed a number of extra's a few weeks ago I finally cleared down the last castings for the Red Phoenix Project, with a further 10 MBT's for both the North and South.
The beauty of 6mm is that you can churn through armour relatively quickly, the creation of the bases takes longer than the vehicles themselves.

Now why did these take so long in the first place?
Well I think they are FAKE...!!!

I remember buying them off e-bay several years ago advertised as GHQ models. But looking closely at the castings they don't seem as crisp as some of the genuine models.
The track details on the new model on the left is lacking in detail and the barrel is rather weak and flexible which suggests a poor quality metal.

It did get me wondering just how many fakes are on the market?
Flicking through the auction pages on e-bay many sellers seem to be fellow gamers selling on collections but who can really tell?

North & South Korean Reinforcements - Red Phoenix Project

First out of the blocks for April some useful 'fillers' for the North and South Korean Forces for the Red Phoenix Project. When we played the first encounter a few months back, I was short of some key elements, notably air defences and recon units for the South.

Despite the games being in 6mm I don't want to be fielding wall to wall armour I also don't need 5 of everything which is the challenge with GHQ.

The GHQ models are great castings and at 1/285 scale are slightly larger to the eye but can be a touch expensive so I opted for the smaller Heroics and Ros Vulcans in 1/300th scale.
You can buy their models individually at a much reduced rate giving me what I needed at a faction of the cost.

I had a bunch of GHQ's M113's laying unpainted in a box, so filing down the top deck of the M113's allowed me to add the H&R turrets which gave me the correct scale Vulcans to add to me southern defenders.

They look fine to me and the slightly different turret scale is not noticeable..

The Fox Armoured Cars are also by H&R, I did'nt have a any in the current force so as smaller nipper models they fit in really well. Perfect for hiding amongst the villages and outhouses.

I also bolstered the North forces with extra recon units.
4 BRDM2's to give them some extra scouting activity. These I found in a box of spares along with a couple of extra tank companies.
I added some red star decals not that they can been seen standing 3 foot away :-)

And to top up the order from H&R a section of BMP1's for a slightly more modern section. Again without others models to compare against they should be fine on the table.

Then last but not least a couple of Sagger teams to bolster the Infantry and defend against the extra Southern Armour that should make it out of the spares box.

Oh I also completed a couple of flocks of sheep which were also languishing in the spares box.

Not a bad effort for a Saturday.

Red Phoenix Project - 6mm Korean Village

Back in the summer I kicked off the Red Phoenix Project, the fictitious invasion of South Korea in the mid 1980's based on the novel by Larry Bond.

I rebased the infantry and armour to be able to use them with the Seven Days of the Rhine Rules but languishing in the box of shame was a whole bunch of buildings from my first attempt to crack this project a mere 10 years ago. Back then I had painted up perhaps 5 or 6 buildings which left quite a few to get through.

The buildings are a mix of Irregular and Timecast from their Asia and Russian Range. The Irregular buildings are cast in metal which is a rarity these days, they are a little rough around the edges but they do some unusual stuff in their numerous ranges.

I based each of the buildings on an MDF base and added some textured wall paper to create the occasional tarmac area, I added a number of trees which were lying around to give the buildings more of a rural look.

The Irregular Temple makes a great centre piece and bolting on a couple of extra buildings makes it quite a complex to fight over. A BTR 70 and HQ section are tucked away in the grounds for scale.

A couple of more rural buildings for use on the table.

Wooden buildings are not great when it comes to HE as the above ruins prove.

I tried to mix the buildings into both rural and urban, creating a couple of farm community farms and some buildings based quite close together to create shop fronts or a more urban area.
With over 20 buildings making up the village that should be more than enough for the various force to fight over.

I have a wish list of additional items needed to fill the gaps in this project largely for the South Koreans or US forces and then on the terrain front  perhaps some industrial items, pylons, paddy fields and vehicles to flesh out the table.

Now all I need is some game time to try the rules and new terrain.

Seven Days to the Rhine - South Korean Formations..

On to the South Korean's.
So it turns out I had not painted anywhere near enough of these, time to check the spares box or a quick order to GHQ to flesh out the ranks in the coming weeks for some SP Guns, AA vehicles and recon elements.

Once again based and formated for Seven Days to the Rhine.

So with a scratch force of South Koreans and their numerically superior neighbours complete, on to the buildings to give them something to fight over.
I have a batch of Time Cast south asian buildings to base up and some other earlier efforts in need of improvement. But should be able to bring these to the table by August.

Seven Days to the Rhine - North Korean Formations..

Not a bad turn around in 24 Hours I am going to call these done.
The Infantry look far more functional on the larger bases and the added flock gives them some depth that was missing before on the smaller 2cm square bases.
I am not sure to upgrade the vehicles to the FOW bases but lets see how much game time they get in their new formations first.

Having dug out some formation stats for a North Korean Infantry and Armour Brigades for around the mid 1980's and adding a couple of tweaks to fit what I have this should give me largely enough to represent the major formations in the Red Phoenix novel.
Given the point requirements for Seven Days to the Rhine Rules, I thought I would save myself some time by pointing them up and documenting the various units here on the blog.
There are a couple of stats and points missing for the less mechanised units but it's a start.

As usual I am now looking at a couple of extra purchases to flesh out some of the units but am pretty pleased with this weekends efforts.
