Armée d'Orient for Sharp Practice - Légère Skirmishers.

January always seems to see a spike in my painting activity and this year is no different after finally completing the core French forces the Skirmish elements seem to have taken no time at all.
Or could it be reading the campaign suppliment - Dawn and Departures I am itching to get some lead on the table?

I had a small number of Legere painted up originally but have expanded these to include make up two groups of skirmishers.

I opted for the classic French Blue allowing me to mix between the original French uniforms and the Kleber option.

Each groups comes with a Status I Big Man within Sharp Practice which should give them some flexibility on the battlefield.

The combined force comes to 56 points as a core force, this should give them some scope for additional forces such as a cannon or cavalry, although with several skirmishers left and a couple of tweaks and they would make a great proxy for members of the Coptic Legion?

21st DBL - French Infantry complete - The first offering of 2017

A new year and a new start after the dismal finish to 2016, 2017 starts with a bang...

After a couple of false starts the core French Infantry force for the French Expedition to Egypt is well is well under way. Back in November last year I completed the test figure basing the unit upon that of the 21st DBL, I now have the first 3 groups complete.

When considering the make up on the force for Sharp Practice I wanted to rely on the tactics of the day with masses of skirmishers and artillery to shock the enemy before fast moving enthusiastic columns moved in with the bayonet to deliver the coup de grace and drive the Ottomans from the field.

I decided to follow the guide lines set out by Rich for the French in the early revolutionary period but reduce the core unit of Line Infantry down from 4 to 3 Groups of 8 Regulars, with two officers in command.
A Leader Officer Status III and a supporting NCO at Status II.

I painted up a Standard Bearer (awaiting a flag at the moment from GMB Designs) and a Drummer to give me some support options within the Sharp Practice rules.

I wanted to give them "worn" look and have mixed a number of trouser colours to break up the uniformity, Perry Miniatures already have several head variants so the unit has a good mix of posses.
The French expedition suffered incredible supply issues after the Battle of the Nile. To address the issue of uniform resupply they redesigned the uniform and adopted a wide variety of colors to the Demi-Brigades as they lacked sufficent French Blue to issue to the army tailors. These Kleber uniforms included: Light Green, Sky Blue, Red, Purple, Brown, Dusty Pink, and Violet.
Perhaps next time I will experient with a pink or violet?

For reference I used the following colours.

Tunic - Coat d Arms - Bavarian Blue.
Back Pack - Foundry Chestnut Shade 53A
Rifle - Foundry Tan Shade- 14A
Barrel, Flash Top - Citadel Lead Belcher - High Lighter Mithril Silver.
Flask - Citadel Tau Light Ochre
Flask - Vallejo 160 Neutral Grey
Roll - Vallejo 168Black Grey, Foundry Rawhide 11c, Raw Linen 30c
Flesh - Citadel Elf Flesh, Founndry Palomino 56B
Plume - Foundry Deep Blue Shade 20A, Citadel Mephiston Red
Collar and Cuffs - Mephiston Red.
Webbing - Coat d Arms 101 White
Head Gear - Citadel Black
Buttons - Vallejo 173 Old Gold
Army Paint Soft Tone wash.

Next up a couple of groups of Legere to give me a skirmish screen to keep the Ottoman cavalry at bay.

Once complete the force be made up of the following points.

LEVÉE EN MASSE
Leader, Status III
Leader, Status II
Three Groups of Line Infantry, Muskets

Leader, Status I
One Group of 6 Légère Skirmishers, Muskets

2016 A year in review.

Another year gone in a flash.
Hard to believe the blog has been going 5 and a half years, in what is now the New Year custom, I thought I would look back over the past 12 months and review the projects undertaken and consider the potential ideas for the year ahead.

The year started so well with a reasonable amount of time in front of the brushes, but I fell away badly in the second part of the year, what with real life challanges and illness. Still I do find that the Christmas break is a great way of kick starting the year ahead.

Surprisingly I kept new projects to only a few and actually completed a couple of them to a point where now I am only looking at impulse purchases at future shows - I am a sucker for all things shiny.
Most of my focus was again in the Far East with Japanese cavalry finally making it to the gaming for the RJW.

The largest project came due to a new recruit over at the Wyverns in the form of Furphy who had a passion for modern warfare in particular Chechnya.

Chechnya & Urban Sci-fi - 15mm
I had been looking for quite a while for a set of ultra modern rules which allowed me to put on large scale skirmishes without the book keeping of some of the current crop of modern squad level games. I found myself drifting back into retro gaming of the 1980's with the use of Laserburn, Imperial commander. Loads of Dice, Casualties and fun.

I completed a modern Russian force complete with BMP's and BTR's, Chechin insurgents and supporting Artillery.

If that were not enough, the Russians were expanded to include some more modern/Sci-Fi vehicles and walkers to combat an impulse purchase from Rebel Miniatures in the US - Out of world invaders who happened to have landed in Eastern Europe.
Or simply an excuse to use the growing collection of resin buildings.

Not to bad at all two projects completed in full in less than 6 months.

With the mass of new releases for the Cold War wargaming in 2016/2017 who knows this may see a further expansion in the year ahead, besides I have a Russian village that's sitting in a box some where which needs to join the paint queue.

The Water Margin/Sung Chinese - 28mm
Having agreed to put on a participation game at Hammerhead in March the Water Margin Project continued apace. With cavalry and more government forces added to the collection.
Hammerhead was a cracking days gaming with oriential fortune cookies for all who took part.

I had loose plans for converting Dux Britanniarum to Ancient China but the release of Watchful Studio's Kickstarter provided me with some fantasy elements (which have yet to grace the table) so I switched to Advanced Songs of Blades and Heroes which gave the right feel, however I now have enough forces to use for Dragon Rampant for larger conflicts if I actually sat down and worked out the stats.

Napoleon in Egypt - Sharp Practice 2
Finally in the later part of the year, the Egypt project was back up and running, the nudge provided by the release of the Too Fat Lardies - Sharp Practice 2 and the campaign rules - Dawns and Departures.
This upgrade is begining to last as long as the campaign itself.

A number of these mini's have been languishing in their storage box for a year or so, but with new releases from Brigade Games and Perry Miniatures the project is very much back on for 2017.

So what else for the year ahead?

So far the plans are some what loose but they do have a Black Powder feel to them.

Napoleon in Egypt - Sharp Practice 2
I need to finish the core French force which are in the final stages on the paint table - Perry Miniatures have produced a number of new releases including cavalry for the French so these will be a muster - just can't decide on camels or horses?

Haiti Revolution - Sharp Practice 2
Ever since the Lardy day back in the summer I have been drawn to the Haiti Revolution, I am justifying the purchases as another excuse to use my jungle terrain, but the truth is, Trent miniatures produce some lovely figures and the period is crying out to be gamed using Sharp Practice.
British, French, Spanish, Slaves and Free People.

Warlords of Atlantis - Cutlass!
Since the impulse purchase from Antediluvian miniatures and their excellent Atlantians I have an urge for a Black Powder/Pulp cross over skirmish affair.

I picked up a number of packs of Black Scorpions Pirate range during the 2016 show circuit that have not seen the light of day yet. Perhaps a coastal community attacked by the Atlantians or maybe something a little more main stream wreckers vs Crown forces?

I am not sure whether this was to much junk telly over Christmas. But why do I find myself Googling 28mm crabs?

15722541_10154848255985879_1801804302_n

Outside of these firm ideas, I can see more colonials making an appearance due to the fun games we have had with Dan Mersey's excellent rules The Men who would be Kings.

Perhaps French Foreign Legion as I look to expand my desert terrain and give it more uses or even Pathans but this could be a little more challanging on the terrain front.
Mongols could make an appearance to give me a few more uses for the Chinese village - but the thought of more cavalry - eek.
And then there could be a couple of purchases to support some of the newer rule sets Broken Legion, Rogue Stars - both of which offer interesting campaign ideas.
Well all in all 2017 should be another fun year if only I can keep a focus.......

On the painting front 2016 was a pretty good performance producing over 200 foot figures but well short of the 300+ from 2015.

The 2016 results by month.

Flashing Steel - The last game of 2016..

Quite possibly the last game of 2016 and the last club before Christmas saw us return to Elizabethan England and an attempt by the evil Spanish to capture the Queen of England and whisk her off to Spain to marry King Phillip.

I am a great fan of many of the Songs of Blades & Heroes rule set so when Paul suggested we give Flashing Steel a try how could I resist, I played Cutlass! recently so was keen to see how they compared for swashbuckling adventures.

We drew up forces of around 500 points each.
The Spanish had to break into the Farm Complex snatch the Queen and escort her back to the waiting boats, the English had to stop them.

 The Queen awaits her escort.

The Spanish cross the bridge a sneak leads the way looking to clear the way of any defenders.

Face off - The Sneak edges along the wall, whilst the Captain of the guard awaits the invader.

The English trained band lets off a volley, smoke fills the battlefield as the Spanish bucklermen attempt to breakdown the door.

As the door starts to splinter the English charge forward looking to delay the Spanish.

The clock winds down and as English reinforcements rush to the fight.
The Spanish had gained the upper hand in the melee, but the farm gate was still intact and with English no time to find the Queen the invaders would be forced to leave empty handed.

Another valuable edition to the Ganesha Games's stable.
As with many of the SOBH rule mechanics we were pretty much in to normal game play within a couple of turns, as with the earlier rules all of our characters had a quality rating with our senior more experienced characters finding it easier to pass than the lowly infantry and leaders able to command troops to carry out a number of actions within their command radius.

A nice tweak within Flashing Steel is the improved characteristic for the weapons adding to your combat score which can make a significant difference in hand to hand.
This extends into firing with a number of new modifiers including accidental discharge and clouds of black powder which can both help and hinder depending on the way the wind is blowing. In the scenario above the Spanish were protected by the smoke but it also allowed the English to close when they were unloaded.

The rules had a very familar feel to them with characters circling each other looking to land that mighty blow, however I might consider adding back in the gruesome kill, which has been omitted from the rules - shame as this was great for breaking up a melee.

Perhaps a re-run using Cutlass! in the new year?

Mantic Games - Trident Realm of Neritica

I don't profess to be a tread setter, but hot on the heels of the recent Atlantis game comes The Trident Realm of Neritica from Mantic games.
Now there has to be some items in here worth transporting over to the Atlantis project.
  • Water Elementals (mini waves that will crash against the enemy)
  • the awesome Riverguard (which look a little like ninja frogs)
  • Thuul (a bizarre mix of Halfing and octopus… )
  • Gigas (large crustaceans with massive pincers)
The army sets for the  can now be pre-ordered from Mantic Games:
With a full release in February.

The New Year has not even started and I can see a new project appearing over the horizon.

Campaign Suppliment for Sharp Practice - Dawns and Departures.

An early Christmas present for me. Now available from the Too Fat Lardies is the Dawns & Departures campaign supplement for Sharp Practice.

Image result for too fat lardies dawns and departures review blog

Just as the revised French in Egypt near the painting finishing line the campaign suppliment lands.
Perfect for the new and improved adventures of Ensign Claude Canard and his Friend and mentor Ensign Côtelettes de Mouton of the French Sloop "Le Vendeen"

The campaign handbook provides a number of campaign options which only need a few tweaks for fighting in the Middle East all based around a Narrative Campaign system.

79 pages of Lardy goodness - be given a mission. Make life long friends (and enemies), build your reputation and influence at court and make your fortune.
What more could you ask for in 2017...

Now back to the French....

Merry Christmas all.

Cutlass! - AAR - Adventures in Atlantis.

My apologies for the lack of posts of late, I had high hopes for December in terms of hobby time, but a combination of things has meant little or time to myself, still with less than a week before Christmas I can see light at the end of the tunnel and it's no someone bringing me more work.

I mean't post this a few weeks ago, I have been itching to try the Black Scorpion rule set - Cutlass! for some time and whilst the figures queue up behind the French (more on them in a future post) a recent club night saw the first outing and a small encounter pitting Atlantian Guardians against the Borites a reptilian type creature which inhabits the swamps of Atlantis.

Background
Atlantis was dying of the seven cities the first two have been "lost beneath the waters of the outer limits forever" and the third one, Troya, is now deserted and empty. Elsewhere the swamp lands are slowly rising and Mogdaan, Zaarg and Borite attacks on the fourth city of Vaar are increasing in frequency and ferocity.

Atmir has been ordered to take a Guardian Patrol and a handful of trusted slaves into the Outer limits to gather intelligence on Borites numbers and their intentions.

The swamp lands of Atlantis.

Atlanians and human slaves land on the beach looking to see signs of the Borites.

Guardians deploy on the flanks looking to protect the poorer Humans from an sneaky lizard attack.

The reptiles lie in wait.

It starts to go wrong from the start, a Borite is spotted and shot at, he reacts and charges into contact with the lead scout.

The Prisoner soldier is injured in the first round of combat - ouch.

Meanwhile as the Guardians struggle to contain two Borites to their front even though they out number them 3:1, a far larger war party looks to flank the patrol - Gulp.

With many of the Atlantian patrol, spooked, injured, stunned or unloaded, the reptiles start to move in for the kill.

Caught on both fronts the patrol struggles to hold back the attackers, the occasion blow is parried but Guardians and slaves start to fall.

A poor action total for the Atlantians sees them swamped by the swamped dwellers (sorry....). Who with a much better Action roll are able to bring a number of extra attacks to bear.

Atmir and his two surviving Guardians flee the beach. He will be able to report back that they are a credible threat and bloody tough....

On reflection I probably over equiped the Lizardmen or gave them to many bumped up stats or did the Atlantians just suffer from the curse of freshly painted figures?

The rules worked really well and the action points make for an interesting encounter, perhaps the first game for many a year where a single character who has the drop on several can run a mock before the defenders can get into any order.

The Atlantians well armed wasted several orders trying to react to a single ambusher and the close terrain meant they had difficultly get any aimed shots off before the guys with swords and pointy sticks arrived charging in and over coming most of the the defenders.

It will be interesting to play through with the generic offerings in the book to see if the out come was much different. But this scenario for me had a real early colonial feel to - Last of the Mochians anyone?

On a slightly disappointing note and a learn for the Black Scorpion guys is the bind quality of the rules, I really don't expect to have several pages come loose from the binding and drop out after only one game, to the point where I am now considering having to put all the pages in a plastic ring binder, an expense I should not need to carry after only 3 hours of use.
I hope they choose a better printer for the forthcoming Western Version.

Until next time.
