Kings of Bronze - Hittite Chariot Runners

Another weekend and another unit off the production line.

This time Hittite Chariot Runners/Skirmishers from Warlord Games for Infamy Infamy, these are in the dress of the highlands of Anatolia. They lack the more ornate dress of their Syrian and Canaanite brethren.

Nigel Stillman's excellent Warhammer Supplement - Chariot Wars give the following background.

Chariot runners were the retainers of the Chariot Warriors. They fought on foot as light infantry skirmishers. Their task was to support the Chariots by skirmishing, fighting alongside them in combat, scouting for ways through rough ground, capturing fallen enemy chariot crews and rescuing their own fallen charioteer crew.
Hittite chariot runners rode in chariots at the Battle of Kadesh as a tactical innovation as a tactical innovation.

With this in mind this creates a challenge within Infamy Infamy, I was tempted to denote them simply as Javelin armed skirmishers, but within the rules this would not allow them to proactively close in combat so I opted for flexible drill to allow them to engage in hand to hand and support the Chariots.

The Chariot Runners can also ride inside the chariots and deploy from the chariots anywhere up to the limit of the Chariot's movement including in contact with the enemy or alternatively they may dismount on their leaders card if the Chariots have not moved in the turn and move and fight on foot.

  4. Beautiful work on these and interesting to understand their tactical role...which make perfect sense...not sure how many would fit into the chariot though...a couple, in addition to the crew?
